Name of Assignment: Socratic Seminar: Oedipus Rex
Subject: HIST 152
Facilitator/Teacher: Michael Ryan
Socratic seminar where students answer the provided questions and discuss their view of the story. Civic Literacy and Engagement skills would be used in this assignment since the students had to learn and understand how the play portrayed different societies and their cultural values. I am proud of this assignment since it took a vast amount of time to understand a play that was written thousands of years ago. It also showed me how the greek culture portrayed their gods and how much they believed them, and in their prophecies. I improved my skill by learning how the greek culture functioned and how the play impacted the people in Greece and around the world. The most difficult thing was to understand the motives of the main character, the play ended up with him killing his father and marrying his own mother like the prophecies mentioned by the oracle. The different roles of gods were also a difficult task to understand, but in the end, it was seen that most of the gods and their messengers were never disobeyed by their people. If I would start over I would improve how I interpreted the play and used more sources on the play to understand it better. In the Seminar, many people did not fully understand the play, although after communicating the picture became more clear about the play. This relates the Greek and history and how things were run in Greece. Before I used to learn about greek culture and now this play gave me a better understand =ing of how the greek people lived during that time. I could apply this to future learning by better understanding the greek culture and its history of plays and drama. The play also portrayed how the greek culture and the people had lived back then, and how something cruel to the modern world. Greek culture is fascinating and even now there are some untold and forgotten stories, that still might appear throughout time or might be forever forgotten.
